Qtel is an investment-grade, publicly listed operator in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia, through 17 subsidiaries with $7bn in revenue, $20bn in assets and 50m customers. The most senior of my two roles at Qtel was as the Senior Director of Investment Management within Group Finance. My team of five provided regular management information to the CFO and Board on all major subsidiaries. We initiated detailed monthly and quarterly operational performance reviews, advised QI leadership on value-enhancing strategies, led annual budgeting and business planning, improved capital planning and initiated Balanced Scorecard in the planning process, and provided critical support on strategic activities from capital markets initiatives to mergers and acquisitions and investor relations. My main achievements were:

  • Providing, in cooperation with Group finance and legal colleagues, analysis facilitating a highly successful inaugural $5bn bond issue.
  • Leading financial model development that in 2008 gained Qtel its first investment-grade ratings from S&P, Moody’s and Fitch and leading again in 2009 resulting in reconfirmed ratings in 2009.

Previously at Qtel I was briefly a Senior Manager, Investment Management, Group Finance. Promotion resulted from my success leading a team of 3 that was increased to 5, improving performance reporting of our $4bn Wataniya acquisition, re-directing a growing team ranging from analyst to associate director level, and creating systems allowing Qtel Chief Officers and Board members to produce better profit and key performance indicator (KPI) targets for key subsidiaries.
